Nubra Valley has excellent road connectivity with Leh, the capital city of Ladakh. From Khalsar, you can either go towards Nubra river or Shyok River, the desert is everywhere in both the valleys.
By Air: The nearest airport is in Leh, which is about 150 km from Nubra Valley. You can take a flight to Leh Airport from your nearest airport. From Leh Airport, hire a taxi or take a bus to Nubra Valley.
By Rail: The railway stations of Jammu Tawi, Chandigarh, and Pathankot are the best points to embark on your journey towards Leh (Ladakh).
By Road: Chandigarh and Pathankot are both excellent locations to enter Himachal Pradesh and move towards Ladakh. You can either drive your own vehicle or use Himachal Parivahan (HPSRTC) buses for a comfortable journey to Leh.
1. Take a bus to Manali from Pathankot/Chandigarh. (280-300 kilometres)
2. Change buses from Manali to Karu. (400 Km)
Note: Acclimatisation of minimum of 2 days is compulsory for people who visit high altitude areas in Ladakh, especially when travelling via flight.
Tip: Find solo travellers interested in visiting Nubra Valley and ask them to share a taxi. The taxi to Nubra Valley will cost around Rs. 3,000 to 3,500 per person.
Best time to Visit Nubra Valley: Since this cold desert is accessible only when it's raining in the other parts of the country, one can visit Nubra Valley only from June to October.
Khardung La: Moving ahead of Leh, towards the Nubra Valley, you cross one of the highest passes of the world, Khardung La. While entering the valley, you see the mesmerising views of the city of Leh amidst barren mountains. The whole area is extremely dry, with different shades of red and brown, and appears desolate, as if one is passing through huge piles of small pieces of stone.
When you reach the pass, you may find snow on all surrounding mountains. When you'll drive at such an extreme height, it will really give you feelings of an adventurous experience, like out of the world.
Khalsar: This small village is located at 3264 m and can be considered the entrance of the Nubra Valley. From Khalsar, you get two ways towards the valley, one alongside the Shyok River and another alongside the main Nubra River.
However, the deserted area starts from Khalsar, and you can see the vast deserted landscapes clearly. Various men offer an ATV (all terrain vehicle) ride on these barren lands, which may cost you around Rs. 1000 to 1500 per 15 minutes.
Diskit Monastery: The main town in Nubra Valley, located at 3144 metres, is surrounded by vast sand dunes, creating a desert-like landscape. The Shyok River flows through Diskit, offering opportunities for river rafting and kayaking.
You can enjoy double-humped camel safaris and explore the dunes. Diskit Monastery, a 14th-century monastery, is the most prominent attraction of the region. The giant 32-metre Maitraya Buddha statue is visible from far in the valley. This is a must-visit place in Diskit village.
Samstanling Monastery: The beautiful monastery is located near Sumur village in Nubra Valley. Founded in 1841 by Lama Tsultim Nima, the monastery has a rich history and is home to around 50 monks.
The monastery is adorned with beautiful murals, Buddha paintings, and other religious symbols. The exterior is painted in red, gold, and white hues, making it visually striking. Surrounded by stunning landscapes, including apricot orchards and prayer flags, the monastery offers a peaceful and serene atmosphere.
Panamik: The small village on the banks of the Nubra River offers exceptional landscapes of mountains and deserts. The primary attraction in Panamik is the hot springs, believed to have medicinal properties.
Panamik is the only village before the Siachen glacier, which has a good number of houses and inhabitants. The locals here are so pure, and you can learn a lot about their lives and traditions.
Ensa Gompa: Ensa Gompa is considered one of the most important religious Buddhist sites in Nubra Valley. The Ensa monastery was founded by Kushok Danma, a monk from eastern Tibet, in the 19th century.
Ensa Gompa is situated opposite Panamik village, nearly 150 m above the Nubra River. The monastery lies on top of a rock from where you can enjoy the beautiful snow-clad peaks of the Nubra Valley.
Yarab TSO Lake: The sacred lake is located amidst the deserted mountains in the Nubra Valley, nearly 6 kilometres from Panamik village. You have to walk and trek for around 2 kilometres to reach the lake, which is no less than a hidden gem in the valley. Since very few people reach this lake, the complete solitude and strong winds give you the opportunity to observe this area more attentively.
Drive on the World's Highest Motorable Road
