The ancient site of stepwell is one of the best places to visit in Gujarat. Also one of the four UNESCO World Heritage sites in Gujarat, Rani ki Vav is one of the most ancient stepwells of India located in the Patan district. There is some debate among historians about whether it should be classified as a stepwell or an inverted temple.
Unlike most vavs in India, which were typically commissioned by kings, available evidence suggests that Rani ki Vav was built by Queen Udayamati in loving memory of her husband, King Bhimdev Solanki I, around 900 years ago.
This remarkable structure resembles a stepwell but features carvings of gods and goddesses that lend credence to the theory that it might be an inverted temple. Regardless of its classification, it boasts 800 incredible sculptures adorning its walls.
Before excavation, the entire site was buried due to a flood in the Saraswati River, with only the well remaining visible. The bold effort of excavation, clearing, and restoration was initiated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 1958.
This work was halted and resumed several times and, carried out in phases, took a total of 32 years to reach its present form. In 2014, Rani ki Vav was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its image now graces the Indian 100-rupee note.

By Air: The nearest airport to Patan is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) in Ahmedabad. You can board a direct or connecting flight to reach Ahmedabad Smart City. By Railway: The nearest railway station is Mehsana Junction railway station, which is around 55 kilometres from Patan.
