Located near the India-Nepal border, the Sandakphu-trek in West Bengal offers breathtaking views of the world's third-largest mountain, Kanchenjunga. Sharing its boundary with Nepal, the eastern Himalayan range is known for being one of the most amicable international borders. Under the surveillance of armed border forces, this border allows visitors to roam freely between India and Nepal.
In Nepal, Sandakphu is also known as Santakpur. Legend has it that some saints were meditating here and attained salvation during a snowstorm. The weather here is mostly foggy and chilly. However, in November and December, the sky clears up, making massive mountains like Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse and Mount Everest easily visible.

Ascending towards higher altitudes from the valleys of the Himalayas, dotted with small villages and winding paths, is an extraordinary experience. Nature is well preserved here by locals and authorities. As the entire area falls under the Singalila Forest, permission is required for the trek. This permission can be easily obtained from the Forest Office in Maneybhanjyang.
Hiring a trek guide is mandatory for the 65-kilometer Sandakphu-Phalut trek. Additionally, separate permission is required for tents and mules. Each permission has different charges, but they are not excessively expensive, except for mules. The facilities for staying and dining here are excellent. This place is not only filled with natural beauty but is also exceptionally clean and tidy.
